In my first session with Sabrina, I was all bravado. She sat back and asked me to show her what I’d been working on, and I hastily moved through the vinyasas I’d learned using an at-home DVD series. I was pretty flexible and very fit. What could Sabrina teach me that I couldn’t pick up on my own?
As I finished my most impressive balance posture, she congratulated me on my hard work, and then asked me lay on my mat. She put my yoga block behind me, pinning my chest upward and my shoulders back for several minutes. I joked and complained at how uncomfortable it was, but instead, she began reading an excerpt from The Way of the Peaceful Warrior.
“Yoga is not only a tool for the body, but one for the heart,” she went on, “and the charge of all human life is to be a warrior of the heart. Cut through pain and discomfort with a sword of love and understanding by letting your heart shine through all you do.”
I began searching for the comfort within the pain I was feeling, and sure enough, it was there; a tiny voice assuring me that I could ease the ache by knowing I would survive it. I relaxed into the pose and I had my first glimpse into what my own attempts at yoga could not teach me: my body is a vessel to a greater spiritual understanding, linked through the balance created by yoga.
I have now worked with Sabrina in my home for four months, and I have found her to be one of the most astute teachers I’ve ever had. As someone who also teaches fitness and nutrition, I love how quick she is to modify my workouts based on how I feel that day. I have more energy, focus, and balance after a session with her than I’ve ever found in a gym. When I needed to reach my heart chakra that day- she knew it. The dolphin posture I am working on to break through my muscle mass- she assigned for homework. She has inspired in me a personal quest to strengthen the link I have uncovered and I am excited for what the coming months will bring.
I highly recommend Sabrina Luciano and Plum Blossom Yoga to anyone hungry for discovery. Thanks to the wisdom and dedication she infuses in her lessons, I am striving to be a ‘Warrior of the Heart’ whether I’m on the mat or stuck in the grocery line, and I am certain she can share the same gift with you.
